How Lake Fuschl Came to Be

Just like the other lakes in the Salzkammergut district, Lake Fuschl came in to being after the end of the four ice ages when the foothills of the Alps were covered by massive glaciers. These not only brought huge amounts of ice and rocks from the Alps into the Salzkammergut, but also huge amounts of melted snow and water. The first lake that was formed in this way in this area was enormous and stretched as far as Laufen. Over the years, in certain parts, the shores decayed and the water seeped out creating numerous smaller lakes – like Lake Fuschl. As well as the over 80 ponds and lakes that came into being in the Salzburg district of Flachau and the Salzkammergut Lake District, the beautiful fen or moor landscape was also created. While in other areas the marshlands have disappeared, the occasional marshy or reeded inlets around the lake remind us of Lake Fuschl’s history.

Water Quality

Lake Fuschl is the only lake in the Salzkammergut Lake District that lies in its entirety in the County of Salzburg. 4 Kilometres in length, its marvellous location makes it one of the best-loved lakes in the Lake District. The picturesque Castle Fuschl on the shores of the emerald green waters of the lake impresses visitors and locals alike. The clarity of the water (predominantly of drinking water quality), underwater visibility as deep as 6 metres and some of the highest water temperatures in the lake district, make swimming here a delight.

Art

The crystal clear waters of the lake and the charming countryside has inspired many famous painters and poets: Ludwig Richter, Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller und Heinrich August Noé are the most renowned artists who have used Lake Fuschl and this part of the Salzkammergut as a motive for their works.

The Surrounding Area
