The city of ceramics

Culture at Lake Traunsee in the Salzkammergut Lake District

Gmunden lies on the northern shores of Lake Traunsee in the Salzkammergut Lake District. The municipal area contains the northern and the eastern shores of Lake Traunsee.

The city is known as point of origin of the ceramic manufacture with its white and green pattern. Back in the times of emperors Gmunden was a famous spa. Nowadays people know it from the Austrian-German TV show 'Schlosshotel Orth' which was shown on TV in the 1990s.

Lake Traunsee takes over the main part of the municipal area of Gmunden. Before 1900 the lake caused many floods and today you can still see the marks of the dates of the most dangerous ones on the house walls.
