The dark berries of the Elder-bush or Sambucus, is indelibly linked with the life and traditions of the people who live here. Condemned as witches berries, treasured for its healing powers, Elderberries have always been in a source of mystery and legend. To this day the Elderberry is planted next to the houses to safeguard man, animal and property.
Nowadays you are just as lightly to encounter elderberries on your plate as on your walk: Elderberry syrup, diluted with fresh mountain water makes the most refreshing hikers thirst-quencher or delicious smelling battered elderberry umbels sprinkled with icing sugar.
